Hamptons en Plein Air

In 2024, I noticed that the Instagram 'handle' "Hamptons Plein Air" was unused. As I am constantly looking for plein air art making opportunities, I thought it might be a helpful idea to curate a site focused solely on doing that. I'm not sure how many of the 85 followers for this account are finding it is useful, but while searching for plein air adventure I have found a number of art making opportunities.
The Bridgehampton Museum
The Bridgehampton Museum has gradually increased their curriculum to include not only indoor art classes in water color, acrylic and oils, but also hosts bi-monthly seasonal en plein air classes. The next scheduled class taught by Howard Rose is on Saturday, July 26th, RSVP HERE. The Bridgehampton Museum organizes each plein air session through its relationships with local host institutions. For example, the first plein air session was at The Bridge Golf Course. An artist on their own would never be allowed there to paint, so this workshop was especially unique! The most recent workshop was at the Madoo Conservancy which offered numerous beautiful views to try to capture.

Barbara Thomas Art Springs Studio
Barbara Thomas teaches private and group lessons. She is hosting Friday evening paint and picnic sessions on July 18th and August 1st at the Long House Reserve from 5:30 - 6pm. Reservations HERE
Golden Eagle Arts
If you are in The Hamptons and want to shop for art supplies IN PERSON, Golden Eagle in East Hampton is the place to go. They also have barn/garage behind the shop which hosts classes. The classes are mostly indoors, but occasionally seep out into the yard. They are the only place that I know of that reliably offers frequent classes for children as well as adults. Class schedules are HERE.
Lois Bender, Garden Spirits NY
Lois frequently does outdoor watercolor workshops. Most recently they have been at The Baker House.

Plein Air with Megan K. Euell
Megan Euell leads a series of summer plein air group classes in The Hamptons during the summer. The next session begins July 23rd. To reserve go HERE. I took one of her classes last summer and it was great. Megan took us through the process of creating a painting outdoors in the same location for three days. You had the opportunity to finish one or multiple paintings of the site.
The Church, Sag Harbor
The Church is currently only offering indoor art workshops. I highly recommend the Monotype print making classes. Their resident artists offer programming during their stays. Check The Church website for new class opportunities.
Of course follow artists (or their gallery representative) that you admire by being on their email lists or via social media. That way if they happen to give an artist talk or workshop you will find out about it.
Above are some of the art opportunities out east. Let me know what I've missed!
