Artists for Ukraine

4/24/2022 1:27:41 PM | By Gail Gallagher | Comment on this

Immediately following the horrific news of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, fundraisers took shape worldwide for humanitarian aid. In Sag Harbor, led by artists April Gornik and Eric Fischl, through THE CHURCH, over 100 artists called to help and donated their work for an online auction.
100% of funds raised will benefit Ukraine through RAZOM.

On Saturday, April 30th artwork by the 100+ participating artists will be displayed at THE CHURCH, Grenning, Keyes Art, Kramoris and Sara Nightingale Galleries in Sag Harbor.

Bidding is currently live at GalaBid.

Desperately upset over this invasion, I grasped on to this additional way to contribute with both hands. How could this be happening again? Had previous wars taught us nothing? My heart ached. Blue and white, the sunflower image, the previously peaceful beauty of Ukraine, drifted through my imagination.  I called Sag Harbor Florist to ask if they were able to get sunflowers in March. Ironically, they had hundreds of them the previous day for a funeral. I mentioned to the store's owner, Anastasia Casale, that I was looking to paint a still life to donate for a fundraiser for Ukraine and she kindly donated the arrangement that was to become my painting model.

I confess now that thinking I could whip up an inspired painting within a deadline was a really bad idea, even one inspired by all of the best ideas and intentions. There was really no margin for error. Thankfully, it is complete, framed and ready for a new home.

The Wednesday Group 12th Anniversary at Gardiner Mill Cottage Gallery

The Wednesday Group celebrated 12 years of plein air painting together with a show at the Gardiner Mill Cottage Gallery.  Founding member, Gene Samuelson graciously welcomed Hugh and I into the group recently and allowed us to join their anniversary show. An inspiring group of artists, the Wednesday Group meets regularly to paint en plein air at locations throughout The Hamptons. The varying styles and interpretations of each scene are exciting to see.
